Upcoming junk and stuff

It’s been tough this week  with the kids being off from school because the schools are struggling to clear the snow out and other things going on. I hope to have something about Wild, wild west out tomorrow. Next week I should be able to get to reviewing some movies. Not sure what I’ll review. Maybe I’ll get brave pull out some of those bargain bin horror collections and watch some grainy version of a zero budget film I have never seen before.

Take care!

Snow and more snow

It started snowing in my area around sunset on Friday and snowed until about an hour sunset on Saturday. It dropped almost 30 inches of snow and at times the winds hit 35 MPH. I spent the better parts of Saturday and Sunday shoveling but now we are out. School is still out for the kids. Fortunately the power never went out. I spent much of Saturday watching Wild, wild west and the Adventures of Brisco County. Hope to get back to posting reviews soon.

Take care!

Upcoming junk and stuff

I had planned to review several movies last week. Then all of that fell apart when I found out we are expecting our worst snow in six years starting tomorrow and going into the weekend. Just hope we don’t lost power. If we maintain power I may write this weekend. If not then it may be into next week until I return.

Take care!

Four sided triangle

These two boys Bill and Robin loved this girl Lena, but she liked Robin more which upset Bill. Later Lena and her family moved away. Bill and Robin stayed in the area and grew up to be scientists who worked together. They are trying to make a machine called a Reproducer that will yes reproduce things. Lena pitches in to help them. The guys make progress with the machine, but once again they both fall for Lena and once again she prefers Robin. Lena and Robin get married and the guys stop work on the reproducer. Bill still has feelings for Lena and wants to duplicate her with the machine. She unwisely agrees. The duplicate is made and Bill calls her Helen, but he unwisely lets her meet Robin. Since Helen is an exact duplicate of Lena she also prefers Robin to Bill. Poor Bill nothing is going his way. He unwisely decides to try electro-shock therapy on Helen to erase her feelings for Bill and Lena yes unwisely agrees to help him. These characters may interesting, but they aren’t all that bright on some things. The machinery bursts into flames. Robin and the local physician get there and only have time to rescue one person-it’s one of the women as Bill and the other woman die in the flames. The woman has no memory, but the physician checks her neck for a scar that Helen had gotten and no scar so it’s Lena the original.

Roll the credits.

The negatives-The music is somewhat light at times and kind of goes against the mood that the film turns to.

The positives-The acting, locations, sets and story are overall quite strong.

Director Terence Fisher would become a legend with Hammer films only a few years after this film. Although not a horror film we see a lot of elements in this films that Fisher would later use in the Curse of Frankenstein. A scientist driven by his own feeling to do experiments involving humans. This films sometimes gets overlooked because it hit well before the studio would become known for some great horror films. It’s definitely worth tracking down and seeing.

Ten things I learned from Spaceways

Check out my new toy, dudes.

I’m scared of color, please keep me in black and white.

Most sources say this film was made in 1953, but I have seen 1952 listed as well

1-Designing a spacecraft involves a lot of standing around and talking endlessly.

2-In the 1950’s everyone smoked everywhere.

3-You can easily get a pass to get in to a government installation, but getting a pass to go out isn’t as easy to obtain.

4-Scientists love to go to parties even when there’s lots of work to do.

5-Having marital problems and being suspected of murder while working a spacecraft won’t help you do your job well.

6-Scientist love wearing white overall around the work area.

7-Spacesuits can be made out of the thinnest and cheapest plastic you can find.

8-Some times a space travel ready rocket can look like a painted backdrop.

9-One could easily swap places with a real astronaut and security wouldn’t even question it.

10-In space something will always go wrong.

The negatives-This is a very, talky and slow movie. The sets are so cramped I felt myself hunching over as I watched it like the walls were closing in on me. The title, case and poster try to sell this as a sci-fi film, but it’s more of a spy film with a rocket launch background.

The positives-The leads try to make it work. Even though the spacesuits looked to be made of cheap material I still kind of liked the style.

This early Hammer film came at a time when the company was still making films that were more noir than horror or sci-fi. While this one tries to put in some sci-fi parts it’s more spy drama and a very lukewarm one at best.

The rocket scientist parties are the best.

And further more blah, blah, blah.

Upcoming junk and stuff

Sad to say goodbye to actor Alan Rickman who passed away after his battle with cancer. In recent years audiences know him for playing Snape in the Harry Potter films. Guess this weekend I’ll be digging out Die Hard, Quigley down under and Galaxy Quest to watch and remember him by.

I have not gotten to write much this week, but will have a short post out soon and reviews of the two films I promised between today and Saturday. Let’s check in on the list of films I promised for this month and see which ones are left.

The 3 worlds of Gulliver, War in space, Message from space, King Kong lives, The Sentinel, Four sided triangle, Spaceways, Crucible of horror, Godzilla against Mechagodzilla, Wolfen, The undertaker and his pals and Hercules and the tyrants of Babylon

After this week I have six left and only two weeks which means I have to do three per week. For next week I’ll aim to review The  3 worlds of Gulliver, King Kong lives and The undertaker and his pals. I may toss in an old video game write-up as well.

Take care!

One year shows-The adventures of Brisco County Jr.

One season 1993-94

Right after Army of darkness Bruce Campbell was brought in to star in a Western, sci-fi, action, comedy show on Fox. Adventurer Brisco County Jr. gets brought in on a mission after his father and legendary western police type is killed.  Now Jr. is quick with a gun, but never quite lived up to father’s reputation. He gets another chance, but he is determined to do things his way. With the help of his very bright horse Comet and some others he rides around dealing with various loonies, nasties and other while trying set the old west straight and bring it into the upcoming century.

I watched this show from day one. I thought it was hands down the best show on that season. I was in college at the time and always made time to watch it even if I had to do homework while I saw it. It had the flavor of a 60’s western combined with sci-fi elements and the comedy that only Bruce Campbell could bring to this role. When it canceled after one season I was devastated. It floored me that not everyone loved this show, but then again I was the only one amongst my group of friends that watched it so yeah maybe not many people were watching it. They were missing out.  Fast forward a decade and a half and it comes out on DVD. I watch the episodes and they are just as good as I remember them being. A real shame this gem couldn’t find it’s audience. In just one season it’s a fine show that deserved to go on longer.

Ten things I learned from Message from space

Message-2 Message-3 message-from-space-2-710x369 MfS891G0rZZ2sNL__SL1500_

1-Vine wreaths are acceptable future head wear.

2-Flying a spaceship is a lot like driving a 70’s muscle car.

3-The authorities are no match for hooligans when it comes to fancy spaceship flying.

4-Some robots can be dorks.

5-In the future rich girls change outfits like every five minutes.

6-Getting a glowing, magical walnut is a good thing.

7-Shriveled up silver skin types can have a lot of power.

8-Space samurais don’t look as cool as old style samurais.

9-When space travel becomes common ships won’t be forgotten, but instead they’ll just become spaceships.

10-Even the most annoying sci-fi heroes can win the day.

The negatives- The plot is a wild mess at best. The acting varies from fair down to bizarre.

The positives- The visuals are generally good for the time.

This is a whacky space opera that tries to be cute at times. Due to that it’s hard to ever really take it serious. Overall it’s very uneven. I liked the visuals enough that I manage to watch maybe once a year.

Upcoming junk and stuff

I still hope to review Message from space this week. I’ve watched it, but have not had time to write about it yet. Looking ahead to next week Male-up month rolls on and I hope to review two early films from Hammer studios which are Spaceways and the Four Sided Triangle. I also think One year show will appear as well.

Stay warm, watch football and take care!

Inspired by Star Wars

I reviewed War in space and Message from space is coming soon. These films  and a number of others were inspired or influenced to some extent by either Star Wars itself or it’s success. Star Wars fans tend to foam at the mouth and scream “ripoff” about some of these films which I always find funny since Star Wars borrowed from The Dam Busters. Other fans may find something to like in these films too. Anyways I have a soft spot for a number of these movies and here are some posters.
